Rules and Tools of the English Language

After attending this four hour workshop, participants will have learned:

1.      85% of the English Language is predictable when you know the six syllable patterns:
·         Closed syllable (CVC) short vowel sounds (hat, them)
·         Open syllable (CV) long vowel sounds (no, ha/lo)
·         Silent e syllable (VCe) long vowel sounds, e is silent (ride, snake)
·         Vowel team syllable (VV) two vowels together make one new sound (boat, oil)
·         R-controlled syllable (Vr) bossy r takes over the true vowel sound (bird, corn)
·         Cle syllable (Cle) final syllable of a word with no true vowel sound (can/dle, bu/gle)
2.      Spelling rules and syllable division rules for word attack skills, some examples of these are:
·         Initial /k/ rule
·         1-1-1 doubling rule
·         -ck, -tch, -dge rule
·         vc/cv, vcc/cv syllable division
·         Silent e rule (the drop rule)
·         Y rule
·         v/cv, vc/v syllable division
 
3.      Non-phonetic words:
·         Multisensory activities to introduce and review these troublesome words!
